A Fitness Function for Creativity in Jazz Improvisation and Beyond
نویسنده
چکیده
Can a computer evolve creative entities based on how creative they are? Taking the domain of jazz improvisation, this ongoing work investigates how creativity can be evolved and evaluated by a computational system. The aim is for the system to work with minimal human assistance, as autonomously as possible. The system employs a genetic algorithm to evolve musical parameters for algorithmic jazz music improvisation. For each set of parameters, several improvisations are generated. The fitness function of the genetic algorithm implements a set of criteria for creativity proposed by Graeme Ritchie. The evolution of the improvisation parameters is directed by the creativity demonstrated in the generated improvisations. From preliminary findings, whilst Ritchie’s criteria does guide the system towards producing more acceptably pleasing and typical jazz music, the criteria (in their current form) rely too heavily on human intervention to be practically useful for computational evaluation of creativity. In pursuing more autonomous creativity assessment, however, this system is a promising testbed for examining alternative theories about how creativity could be evaluated computationally.

Automatic Fitness in Generative Jazz Solo Improvisation
IMPROVISATION Kjell Bäckman Informatics Department University West Trollhättan, Sweden ABSTRACT Recent work by the author has revealed the need for an automatic fitness function in the evolutionary algorithm for generation of jazz solos. A computer based automatic fitness function enables greater populations and a great number of generations within a manageable time. This paper describes how th...
متن کاملEvolutionary Jazz Improvisation - Jazz Harmony and Solo Improvisation Created by Means of Evolutionary Algorithms with Automatic Fitness
This paper describes the Evolutionary Jazz Improvisation (EJI) system for creation of jazz harmony and jazz solo improvisations based on evolutionary algorithms with automatic evaluation. The evaluation function is implemented using score calculation based on specific events recognized in the chord progression and solo line, and alignment to different optimal intensity increase and relaxation c...
متن کاملWhat coaches can learn from the history of jazz-based improvisation: A conceptual analysis
From early jazz to current sub-styles, the key component, improvisation, is thought to also be important to the coaching process. Improvisation in jazz can be conceptually linked to the dynamic, interactional relationships such as those found in coaching. Using jazz history, this conceptual paper investigates how jazz improvisation may inform coaches and coachees in individual, group, or organi...
متن کاملJazz musicians reveal role of expectancy in human creativity.
Creativity has been defined as the ability to produce work that is novel, high in quality, and appropriate to an audience. While the nature of the creative process is under debate, many believe that creativity relies on real-time combinations of known neural and cognitive processes. One useful model of creativity comes from musical improvisation, such as in jazz, in which musicians spontaneousl...
